My first (and last) journal entry was the Sunday before Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. If I had only known I would have waited to start another time! I have been feeling like I have neglected my LJ, and it has really bothered me. I work in a hospital in San Antonio, Texas so we received quite an influx of patients, and the city received quite an influx of residents. I was able to personally help several people, but the one person who touched me the most was a 15 year old boy who was autistic. He was with his mother who was very sick, and everyone was beside themselves trying to find someone to watch him. As if he needed a babysitter. I had to laugh at some of these so called professionals who were absolutely amazed when he could pick out exact change for a snack from the vending machine. I wanted to say "Hey you guys, just cause his speech is delayed doesn't mean his thinking is too!" But they were too busy oohing and aahing to notice anything I said. So I just smiled and went on my way knowing that they would be telling that story ALL day.
